“Centuries ago there lived…‘A King!’ my little reader will want to say
right away. No children, you are mistaken. Once upon a time there was a
piece of wood…”Since Carlo Collodi wrote those magical words over 120
years ago young people the world over have been transported to a small
village in Italy and, with eyes wide open, become swept away with the
incredible adventures of PINOCCHIO.
Axis Theatre Company is thrilled to
present the world premiere of our

DRIFTWOOD
A Retelling Of The Adventures Of Pinocchio |
Adapted by DEBORAH
WILLIAMS
Design by YVAN MORISSETTE
Original score by BOB BUCKLEY
Directed by WAYNE SPECHT |
|
DRIFTWOOD opens with 12 year old Sam running through the streets
of his small coastal village. He is running away from the many wrongs he has
unwittingly committed. He takes refuge in a mysterious antiques store, where the wise
Josephine offers sanctuary for a price: Sam must listen to her read classic
children’s literature. “Perhaps you will learn from them.” Sam thinks old
books are silly but Josephine shares The Adventures of Pinocchio and
he soon learns otherwise.
Josephine, a great improviser and puppeteer changes the classic story to
mirror Sam’s life. She makes the Mediterranean of long ago into the Pacific
Coast of today. As the tale unfolds Sam and Josephine are magically absorbed
into the story and a play within a play begins. Their transitions are
enhanced by wonderful masks and puppets and an amazing transforming set.
Sam has many adventures and learns life lessons
as he encounters a bear, a cougar, a spider and a school of salmon, along
with other indigenous west coast characters.
At the end of the story Sam leaves, determined to mend his ways while looking
forward to making a new start with just being himself.
Axis Theatre Company is very excited about DRIFTWOOD: A Retelling
Of
The Adventures Of Pinocchio, and we look forward to bringing it to
your school or community theatre in the near future.
