The play has Lane, a
spunky sight impaired
ten year-old girl, as the central character. She is independent, outspoken and amazingly
resourceful. Sharing a close relationship with Ben her twelve-year-old brother, Lane knows
she can depend on him to protect her. After Lane's family moves to a new town, she
spends her time in a neighbouring field. It is here that she meets ten-year-old Rav, a boy
of East Indian descent.
As Lane develops a friendship with Rav, her brother reacts
negatively and shuns the younger boy through jealousy and ignorance.
Once school starts, Lane and Ben soon discover for themselves what it feels like to be
on the outside and no longer the popular ones. The play reaches a heart pounding crescendo
when all three children work together to survive a perilous situation in the field.
The Field invites the audience to enter a vivid world of imagination featuring a puppet
dog, a flying kite and the smells and sounds of the field setting. This award winning play
celebrates friendship and sensitively explores the ability of the human spirit to overcome
prejudice, whether that prejudice springs from a reaction to race or physical handicap.
